Around 50 people attended the UnitingSA Whyalla Community Centre’s Community Day on Wednesday August 27.
The centre provides valuable opportunities for connection, inclusion and support.
UnitingSA has been a long-time provider of community services in Whyalla with a strong focus on supporting people with mental health needs and people with disabilities.
This new community centre, which opened in February this year, enables UnitingSA to expand our support to people in Whyalla and provides local residents with valuable opportunities for community connection.
The Whyalla Community Centre has been made possible with Department of Human Services funding. Minister Nat Cook, Minister for Human Services and Minister for Seniors and Ageing Well, attended the event and was able to see firsthand the impact the centre is having in the local community.
The Minister joined participants in the centre’s morning cooking class and prepared mini quiches that were served as part of a morning tea for guests.
“The centre is all about providing a safe place for people to come and connect with others and form friendships. The focus of this centre is very much around offering social support,” explains Cathy Hutchinson, Coordinator of the Community Centre.
“Some of the activities we run include various art and craft activities, gentle exercise sessions and healthy budget cooking.”
The centre is on the Corner of Ramsay and Wittwer Streets in Whyalla and is open Tuesday to Friday between 10am to 3pm.
