Everyday tasks can become challenging as we age. Have you noticed your loved ones are no longer able to manage basic jobs? Could they use some support, without losing their independence?
Here are a few signs that might indicate the need for support at home.
Difficulty managing day-to-day tasks
Taking care of yourself and your home can become overwhelming as you get older.
Your loved ones may be finding it difficult to:
- manage their cleaning duties
- look after the garden
- perform maintenance work
- cook meals
- manage their medications
- dress themselves
- run errands (e.g. appointments and grocery shopping).
Decreased mobility
Falls are the leading cause of injury among older people in Australia, so it’s important to ensure your loved ones feel safe and comfortable in their home.
If you’ve noticed new cuts and bruises or a decline in their balance and flexibility, they may benefit from:
- small, helpful assists such as shower chairs
- larger home modifications such as handrails and ramps
- nursing and physiotherapy to improve strength and conditioning.
Lack of social interaction and loneliness
One in ten older Australians experience depression caused by chronic illness, social isolation and loss. You may have noticed your loved ones showing less interest in socialising, a loss of appetite or changing sleep patterns.
They may benefit from social support (having someone to accompany them to social and community events). They might enjoy:
- social groups
- learning a new language
- social bingo
- arts and crafts.
What home care services are available?
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Support at Home can relieve stress for older people and allow them more time to do what they love.
The Commonwealth Home Support Programme offers low-level support (social care and transport), while Support at Home can help with more complex needs (clinical care, personal care and everyday living).
