If you’re just beginning your NDIS journey, you might have heard the terms Local Area Coordinator (LAC) and Support Coordinator (SC). But what are they and how can they assist you?

While both LACs and SCs help connect you to NDIS funded services, they do so in different ways.

What is the role of a LAC?

LACs are your first point of contact when looking into the NDIS. You don’t need a plan to request assistance from a LAC and there is no cost involved. They are contracted by the NDIS to help you:

  • Understand and access the scheme. This includes workshops or talking to you one-on-one about the NDIS and your eligibility.
  • Understand the range of supports and programs in your local area. LACs work within a specific geographic region and have strong connections in the community. Even if you aren’t eligible for the NDIS, your LAC will be able to refer you onto other resources.
  • Prepare your NDIS plan. Your LAC will work with you to understand your current situation, needs and goals. LACs, however, cannot officially create or approve a NDIS plan as this is done by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
  • Apply for reassessment. Your LAC can check-in and see how you are progressing with your NDIS plan. They can also help you apply for changes with a plan reassessment or variation.

What is the role of a Support Coordinator?

You will need to have funding in your NDIS plan to access Support Coordination. A Support Coordinator will help you make the best use your NDIS plan. They can help you do this by:

  • Understanding your plan. Including what you have funding for and what you don’t have funding for.
  • Finding the right providers. SCs will help you connect with the right support workers, therapists or organisations to achieve your goals.
  • Managing your budgets. It can be difficult to know how to spend your funding. Based on your needs, SCs can point you in the right direction.
  • Building your confidence in managing your NDIS plan. Your SC provides one-on-one guidance and over time, their support will help you to manage your plan by yourself.
